What does the filter do in the aquarium?

In general terms, a filter may be considered as a box, in which the water enters with its load of pollutants. The water is aspirated by a pump, transferred into the filter and expelled as a clean and pure liquid into the tank. Various types of filters may be classified, according to the pump and the filter materials adopted, which may preferentially retain or transform different classes of pollutants. We can distinguish 2 main types of filters: mechanical or biological. Any filter contains, as a general rule, a first part devoted to detain the larger suspended particles (food fragments or particles of plant leaves, which may be seen macroscopically and confer an uneven opacity to the water). After this first mechanical filtration there are filtrating substrates suited for hosting a rich bacterial flora. For this purpose, ceramic rings, synthetic spheres and basalt granules are used.
