Which are the rules to travel with your animal by train?
Each country has its own regulations about travelling by train with animals.
In Italy, it is possible to travel by train with your pet: small dogs, cats and other domestic animals can travel free in their carriers in all the categories of trains but they have to stay inside dedicated containers not exceeding 70x30x50 cm. Each traveller can bring his animal in one cage, the box must be kept on your knees if you are travelling in trains with ETR 450 materials (high speed trains).

To carry your dog, you have to pay the price for the train and the class with a fare reduction of 50%. Transport is allowed after reservation at the time when you buy the ticket for the animal's accompanying person. The place in the train in front of traveller can not be reserved from another customer. Animals travelling in carriages cannot stay places for travellers and they don't have to disturb other passengers.
Guide dogs for blind people can travel free of charge on all trains. Each passenger can travel with maximum 2 animals and they don't have to disturb other passengers. If they disturb, both animal and owner, following staff indications, has to occupy another seat or get off the train. Dangerous dogs can not travel in train according to specific indications of the Italian Ministry of Labour, Health and Social Politics (Ordinance of 14 Gennaio 2008) The dogs of blind people can travel free in every train with no duties. For foreign people coming from abroad and travelling by train, there is an obligation to show a registration certificate at dog registry office or dog passport. Otherwise, you have to pay a duty and you must get off the train at the first stop.
